Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at The Meadow, and we're constantly working to improve. We've recently become part of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, and you can learn more about what that means here.
Sourcing our coffee is no different. We sometimes get questioned about whether our coffee is certified as 'Fair Trade'. The answer, put simply, is no - but there's a lot more to it than that.
We prefer to focus on 'Direct Trade', where the roasteries have met with the farmers supplying the beans, and ensure a fair price and relationship. In fact, the wages farmers in direct trade agreements receive are at least 25% higher than the fair trade minimum*.
As well as ensuring the farmer's get a fair price, building an ongoing relationship with the farmers themselves ensures a better quality of coffee and environmental responsibility. It's all about transparency, accountability and fair wages.
And on top of all that, we continue the sustainability chain by turning our used coffee grounds into soap! You can learn more about it and buy yourself a bar here!
