It's hard to believe that as I write this post we're in the second season of the cafe and in the middle of the busiest time of year.
It only seems like last week that Emma and I decided to take the plunge and sign a 5- year lease on a business which neither of us had much experience of dealing with.
From serving coffee at festivals from our little Citroen HY van to running a bricks and mortar catering business seemed quite a leap, which turned out to be very true.
Our first season can only be described as a rollercoaster, from learning how to manage a commercial kitchen to understanding how to cost a menu, and of course dealing with the trials and tribulations of employing full time staff. The challenges came thick and fast plus thrown into the mix was the arrival of our baby daughter India Rose. To say it was a life changing year would be an understatement!
However we knew that if we could just survive the first twelve months we might make it. Through hard work, support from our families, friends and a sprinkle of lady luck we stumbled into 2019 a little bruised but still standing.
As any small business knows you can never rest on your laurels, we now work with a great team and a growing body of support from the local community. Our goals have shifted from basic survival to how we develop The Meadow into the place we imagined when we took over the reins.
Both Emma and I have a real passion for nutritious food and an active lifestyle. My previous occupation was working as a health coach so I'm really aware of how small changes to diet and lifestyle can have a huge positive impact on both mind and body. Emma trained as a Yoga teacher after coming through a period of severe illness, so understands first-hand the importance of putting one's own health and wellbeing at the top of any priority list
We've always aimed to cater for customers who are looking for healthier choices and we're now looking to build a wellness offering into the cafe too. From a monthly Yoga brunch to a weekly social cycle ride, it's our aim to make The Meadow a central hub for wellness gatherings in the area. We'll also be hosting a seasonal feast night celebrating the local produce of the time alongside being joined by a guest speaker for the evening whose stories and opinions will inspire, engage and hopefully challenge us. Our monthly film nights will offer a broad range of screenings to cater for all tastes.
We are very excited to partner with The Retreats group, whose small portfolio of unique luxury hotels in the area will become our base for a series of residential wellbeing retreats we will be hosting starting in January 2020. Led by a team of specialist practitioners in fitness, nutrition and mindfulness these short stays will focus on allowing guests to rest, rejuvenate and flourish both mentally and physically.
We've always been inspired by companies and individuals that have broken the mould and forged their own path. For The Meadow our aim is to create a unique place for joyful experiences and happy memories, we hope you can come with us on our journey.
